Western Regions

Regions

Also known as the Green River Region because the Green River flows from the Ohio River straight across the region, the Bluegrass, Blues, & Barbecues Region is famous for it’s barbecues and music.  The Caves, Lakes, & Corvettes Region is home to the largest cave system in the world, Mammoth Cave National Park.  The expansive Land Between the Lakes Recreation Area lies within the Western Waterlands Region.

Trails

Within the Bluegrass, Blues, & Barbecues Region are unique set of trails that you can embark on.  You can follow three paths that famous blues and bluegrass musicians took to play their music for their fellow Kentuckians.  These paths are called W.C. Handy Blues Trail, Everly Brothers/Merle Travis Trail, and Bill Monroe Bluegrass Trail.  There is also a Barbecue Trail that takes you to 26 different barbecue restaurants.  Follow the Civil War/Military Trail to learn the history of Kentucky and watch Civil War reenactments, or just travel down the Scenic Byway and enjoy the beauty of Kentucky.

Caves

The Mammoth Cave National Park is the biggest and largest cave system in the world.  Located just NE of Bowling Green, this cave system has over 365 known miles of caves and passageways all connected together.  There are tours that are offered on a daily basis that lead you into this enormous cave system.  Tours can go from 1 hour to 6 hours where you travel anywhere between a mile to 5 miles.

The Hidden River Cave is located in the town of Horse Cave.  This 7 mile cave has a subterranean river.  Near the city of Bowling Green is the Lost River Cave.  A spring fed river travels throughout the mile long cave and boat tours can bring you to the dance floor of an old popular underground nightclub.
